Lenses with built-in focus motor focus faster and more quietly than lenses without a focus motor which rely on the camera's body focus motor. minimum focus distance. I'm going to buy EOS 20D and I think the Canon 17-40mm would be a nice lens for normal use even if f4 is not so attractive and 17-40 is pretty xpensive. I don't rely on extreme zoom like 17-85mm with poor f as 4-5,6 and according the quality the 17-40 "L" is better quality. In the market there is a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC (Sigma makes good

Canon 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM review By: Jon Tarrant, What Digital Camera (Oct 7, 2008) Overall, Canon’s EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM is designed to match the needs of demanding professionals and, as such, does so with ease. In the f/stop range commonly used for landscape and architectural photography, the L-prime offers no advantage over using an excellent L-zoom such as the EF 17-40mm f/4L. Corner sharpnes of the 17-40mm f/4 L is better than the 24mm f/1.4 L at f/8 (see below).

The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens is a member of a suite of Canon zoom lenses that retain a constant f4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range. Designed for use on 35mm SLR cameras, this ultra-wide zoom is ideal for capturing dramatic landscape shots and taking portraits of large groups of people. It will also prove useful for shooting in cramped interiors. [ia]

Pre-PMA 2003, 14:00 GMT: Canon has today announced a new 'L series' EF lens. The 17 - 40 mm F4.0 L is designed to be a high quality, lightweight lens for both film and D-SLR cameras. On the new EOS-10D this lens would produce a field of view range equivelant to a 27 - 64 mm zoom lens. For film SLR or EOS-1Ds users this lens provides ultra wide-angle zoom. Other features include a constant F4.0
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens Image Quality (the-digital-picture.com) Side note: I have found the site is a little iffy with lenses shot wide open at f/8 though it seems pretty representative of reality. The above link is shown on the 5Dsr which is 50mp. Looks pretty good.
Used to own this lens many years ago, only used on Canon 5D series cameras. As other said it's soft at edges at 17mm/F4, much better at 40mm side. The new EF 16-35L/4.0 IS is much better. I sold FE 16-35 ZA, bought EF 16-35L/4.0 IS in Canon refurbished with additional 15% off deal together with EF 100-400L IS II as then thought own two systems.

The first clue to a newly-announced Canon lens' image quality is usually the theoretical MTF charts provided along with the press release. Below is a comparison that includes MTF charts for the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens and the Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens.

Today we’ll talk about a professional lens like this, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM, that is priced at $749. Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM is a solid 475 g zoom lens for landscape photography meant for use on full frame cameras. However, it can be used on a 1.6x crop cameras too. It has constant aperture of f/4 in the entire zoom range and can be Dear all, I am picking out a new kit for a trip to the Galapagos in May and am trying to select what lenses to bring along. I am thinking of purchasing either of these lenses to complement an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM (or should I get a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM plus Extender EF 2x III?). secwu0.
