With the Rally Raid Kit on mine it feels like the 990 but handles like a dirtbike should, it tracks much better, steers where you want it to go and can be manhandled over obstacles and popped over logs. I have gone back to standard gearing and it will cruise at 120 comfortably, if you want to cruise faster then go to the 16t front.

When the KTM 690 Enduro replaced the 640 Hard Enduro (and believe me it was) in 2008, devotees expected an adventure version to follow. All they got was the R model with longer-travel suspension. KTM’s reasoning was that Australia was one of the few nations to want an adventure format. I avoided the Rally Raid kit as all my riding is in Ireland and the tank range is ok for that. I had Rally Raid filter and it flowed a ton of air, but it had two issues: the intake honk was terrible and it got filthy pretty much every 100-miles or so. I switched back to the stock air box with added holes and a DNA filter. I don't feel like I gave up much, if anything for HP, it tamed the intake noise, and it stays a lot cleaner.

I recently purchased a rear Rally Raid side mount auxiliary gas tank for my 2014 690 Enduro R. I also purchased the adapter kit if you have Touratech panniers for this bike.
